[파이낸셜뉴스] 미국이 국제 테러조직 알카에다의 지도자 아이만 알자와히리(71)를 제거하는 과정에서 '닌자 미사일' 혹은 '날아다니는 칼날'로 불리는 초정밀 유도 미사일을 사용한 것으로 알려졌다.
조 바이든 미국 대통령은 1일(현지시간) 대국민 연설을 통해 알자와히리가 전날 아프가니스탄에서 미군 드론(무인기) 공습을 받아 사망했다고 밝혔다.
당시 알자와히리는 카불에 있는 탈레반 고위층 소유 주택에 머물고 있었던 것으로 알려졌다.
AFP 통신은 미 정부가 공개한 사진을 보면 해당 건물에 두 발의 미사일이 명중했는데도 폭발의 흔적이 없고 알자와히리 외에 다른 사망자가 발생하지 않았다는 점에 주목해 폭약이 든 탄두 대신 표적에 명중하기 직전에 6개의 칼날이 주변으로 펼쳐지도록 한 '헬파이어 미사일'의 파생형 'AGM-114R9X(이하 R9X)'이 사용된 것으로 보인다고 밝혔다.
R9X는 2017년 비밀리에 배치돼 당시 알카에다의 2인자였던 아부 알카이르 알마스리를 제거하는 데 쓰인 것으로 알려졌다.
당시 알마스리가 타고 있던 차량은 천장에 큰 구멍이 뚫렸고 탑승자를 비롯한 차량 내부가 물리적으로 갈기갈기 찢겼지만, 차체 전면부와 후부는 전혀 부서진 데가 없어 눈길을 끌었다.
이전까지 미군의 미사일 공습은 강한 폭발 때문에 주변의 민간인에게까지 피해를 유발했는데, 이 작전에선 그런 문제가 전혀 나타나지 않았다.
이후 잇따른 미군의 테러조직 요인 제거 작전 현장에서도 비슷한 흔적이 남았고, 결국 R9X의 존재와 특징이 공개되면서 이 미사일은 '날아다니는 식칼' 등의 별명을 얻었다.
AFP는 R9X이 "극단주의 세력 지도자를 민간인 피해 없이 제거할 때 미국이 쓰는 무기"라면서 정황상 알자와히리도 R9X의 표적이 됐던 것으로 보인다고 분석했다.
